Some Cloudy Thoughts

September 15, 2008 Leave a Comment

I have had a few interesting cloud related articles that I have been meaning to share.  Slowly, the melding of the cloud and enterprise virtualization are starting to become more apparent.

  • Peter Laird’s (already dated) Visual Map of the Cloud Computing/SaaS/PaaS Market: September 2008 Update.  I appreciate the way Laird separates Cloud, SaaS and Paas which are each very different.  I’d expect an update to this shortly that features VMware…
  • The 10 Laws of Cloudonomics is an interesting set of “Laws” for the cloud
  • Some food for legal thought on how Cloud computing may draw government action

I would expect to see more articles that start to talk about the joining of the cloud and the enterprise datacenter over the next few weeks…the cloud is not just for the web2.0 or startup anymore.

VMware Announces Virtual Datacenter OS

September 15, 2008 Leave a Comment

Looks like the new was released earlier than I had expected.  Yesterday, ahead of VMworld in Las Vegas, VMware announced the Virtual Datacenter OS (VDC-OS). VDC-OS is (in my mind) a very logical extension of the VMware offering to provide a unified framework for enterprises to power and manage virtualization in their datacenter.  It also also the pre-cursor to eneable the virtualized services to be moved between the enterprise datacenter and enabled cloud providers.  I think this is where things will get really interesting in the future.

Since I don’t have a lot of time to comment on this announcement right now (I’m waiting to board my flight to VMworld), here is a list of reading sources about this announcement:

  • Virtual Datacenter OS from VMware
  • Scott Lowe’s VMware’s Virtual Datacenter OS comments to correct mis-understandings of VDC-OS by some trade rags
  • Yellow Brick’s VMware’s first announcement correctly brings focus to some key features announced
  • PCWorld: VMware Tries to Expand Throughout the Data Center

Watch for more comments through out the week…

Viva VMworld

September 12, 2008 Leave a Comment

Most of the preparations are set for VMworld next week in Las Vegas.  I’ll be down there from Monday through Thursday.  I know that this will be a very exciting show, just based on the announcements that VMware will be making (wish I could tell you more, but not gonna happen till next week…).

I have caught wind of a number of companies that will be making announcements at VMworld next week, including:

  • VMware  (Duh!)
  • Cisco (very exciting announcement, but I can’t say more…)
  • IBM
  • Intel
  • NEC
  • Many, many others both big and not so.

It will be both a fun and hectic week.  All three of my Global Accounts will be attending the show in various sized troupes.  So, between my meetings with them, networking with colleagues, attending the Keynotes, browsing through the Solutions Exchange, and jumping in on a few sessions, I’ll be trying to post as many updates from VMworld as possible.   You’ll be able to find them here under the VMworld 2008 topic as well as via Twitter to the VMWorld Twitter Account and/or the VMworld Hashtag (all depends on how much I have to say… 🙂  ).

If you’re at the show, let me know.  It’s all about networking!

Oh yeah, and I’ll have my camera in tow…make sure to smile.

(Disclosure: I am currently employed at VMware as a Global Accounts Solutions Consultant)
